Lesson 8 - Basic Manoeuvres

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this lesson is to clearly understand the two most important manoeuvres used in sailing - tacking and gybing.


There are several sailing manoeuvres, such as tacking, gybing, heaving to, quick stop, safety position, head to wind, and the sailing clock.

However, the two most important ones to learn first are tacking and gybing.




1. Tacking

Tacking is changing direction, by turning the bow of the boat through the wind.





2. Gybing

Gybing is changing direction, by turning the stern of the boat through the wind.





SUMMARY

You know clearly understand the two main manoeuvres used in sailing:

  • Tacking - bow turned through the wind; and,
  • Gybing - stern turned through the wind.

A turns the stern through the wind.

The turns the bow through the wind.
