Introduction

People have been harnessing the power of the wind to sail for thousands of years, with the earliest record of a ship under sail appearing on an Egyptian vase dated to about 3500 BC. It is by sailing across oceans that civilizations have developed, and new lands have been settled.

Advances in sailing technology from the 15th century onward, enabled explorers to make longer voyages into regions with extreme weather and climatic conditions. Further improvements in sails and equipment, allowed world trade to flourish in the 18th and 19th century.

Sailing uses the wind acting on sails, wingsails or kites to propel a vessel forwards.

Sails have allowed us to conquer the earth’s watery frontiers… and space could be next. The field of solar sails is growing, so who knows where sailing will take us next!

This module aims to cover as many of the technical words and terms used in the forthcoming sail training modules. It is designed to expand the candidates’ knowledge and understanding to prepare them to enter the maritime industry.
